Food storage score!
1 Attachment(s)
My neighbor knows I collect food storage and just offloaded 100 #10 cans of wheat, rice, beans and other foods to me. The mfg is AlpineAire "Gourmet Reserves". Each can appears factory sealed with preparation instructions and information that it was packed with an 02 absorber. The dates are all 1996, as confirmed by my neighbor. The stuff was in his garage here in the Northwest, so a pretty mild climate. I am trying to figure out what is still good. I am pretty sure the wheat is good, and I am going to start opening a few cans soon to test it out. I heard the wheat is good for 30+ years.
What do you guys think? How do I know if it is good? I have plenty of room to store it, and food will not be getting cheaper, especially if the banksters, wall street boyz and goobermit crash our currency. Update: Per LDS website, most of the stuff will sustain life 30 years. http://providentliving.org/content/d...tml#question_6 Per the Mfg, AlpineAire, its more like 10-15 years, which mean this stuff is about to expire... http://www.alpineaire.com/index.php?...id=3&chapter=0 I think I will keep the wheat, rice, and beans, and selectively toss the other stuff... What say ye? |
Re: Food storage score!
Any food will be good IMO

Re: Food storage score!
I wouldn't toss any of it unless I opened it and it was bad - If 1 or 2 cans of a type prove good - give em 5 more years and use along the way sort of like shtf training

Re: Food storage score!
If you've got the storage space, no harm in keeping them, provided 1 or 2 that you test are still good. If any of them are freeze dried, they will last indefinately, although they will lose flavor over time, but still be edible.
Nice score! |
Re: Food storage score!
Better than tossing it, eat it. You'll find out how it lasted and what you like.

Re: Food storage score!
I think I will open a can or two of each representative food, try a little bit out, if tastes ok and doesn't make me sick, keep it, if it is really bad, I will toss it. I think its probably all good, we'll see. Some of it is under our beds, some on shelves, I have found places to stash it. Thanks for the replies.

Re: Food storage score!
Also, if you find it is not palatable, but not spoiled, you could use it to feed your chickens or pigs. If you have any, that is.

Re: Food storage score!
The grains should be good for nearly forever. Even if you were to have the bread problems that Ima Cannin discusses, as long as they taste ok they'll still be good for cereals and pilafs.

Re: Food storage score!
I have some #10 cans of dry milk from the late 90's I was curious whether it was time to pitch, so I opened a can last year, and made it up.....couldn't tell a bit of difference....which is to say, the critters got it, as I'm not a big fan of dry milk produced yesterday. (If you get it really cold, dry milk is not too bad.) This has been stored at 70 or less.
